The inspiration for this project began with imagery from the sentimental seaside of Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth where my grandparents have lived for the last fifteen years. Looking through old photos I came across photography of my great-grandparents and their friends enjoying the seaside during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Inspired by Punch and Judy shows led research into puppetry from the DADA performance movement; along with stripes and geometrics from Bauhaus artists Sonia Delaunay and Anni Albers.
Paul Klee’s hand puppets and Sophie Taeuber Arp’s string puppets are used as drawing and colour references as they encapsulate the exuberant time period of the twenties. Modern and contemporary inspiration came from designers such as Bode and Paul Smith who both have playful approaches to print design and nostalgia influencing their fashion collections.
